FRONT MISSION EVOLVED takes place in the year 2171, where the political landscape has been radically altered by events stemming from the late 20th century.

At the start of the twenty-first century, a wave of economic and political changes would result in a world headed by two massive powers.

The formation of the European Community (E.C.) in 2005 began a sequence of events that redistributed the world's balance of power. The Bangkok Economic Alliance, comprised of several countries in Southeast Asia, formed in 2006. In 2015, the independent states of Russia united as the Republic of Zaftra. In 2019, the Bangkok Economic Alliance added new members Japan and Australia and emerged as the Oceana Cooperative Union (O.C.U.).

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, North and South America joined to become the Unified Continental States (U.C.S.) in 2020, emerging as a true superpower. Six years later, the O.C.U. changes from an economic alliance to a political one.

The two world superpowers of the U.C.S. and O.C.U. would come into conflict several times over the next 150 years, but each time, a fragile peace was restored.

One of the key sources of conflict was Huffman Island, which mysteriously rose from the waters of the Pacific in 1995. Upon its discovery, it was put under the jurisdiction of the United Nations to prevent squabbling over this new territory. However, a UN survey in 2065 revealed that it was rich in mineral resources. The O.C.U. and U.C.S. immediately began settling the island and competing for resources, leading to the First Huffman Conflict erupting in 2070.

With the help of the Republic of Zaftra, the Huffman Treaty was signed by the U.C.S. and O.C.U. in 2071. Both parties agree to ban the use of weapons of mass destruction on Huffman Island. The conflict is finally resolved the following year, and worldwide nuclear disarmament also begins.

It does not, however, mark the end of conflict between the U.C.S. and O.C.U.; the Second Huffman Conflict erupts some twenty years later.

It is now 2171, one hundred years after the signing of the historic Huffman Treaty. The world is in the middle of another cold war. Orbital elevators are linked to large networks of military surveillance satellites floating above the Earth. Each side watches the other, waiting for the moment they are certain will come.

The attack and destruction of one of the U.C.S.'s orbital elevators is that moment. But who is behind it, and what do they want? Is it the O.C.U.? A new threat? A threat from within? What happens next will shape the world for years to come.
